Market researching best-selling products

When I was a marketing agent for some UK companies, I was often asked by clients about best-selling products. Due to the nature of the business I was in, sometimes “our” best-selling wasn’t necessarily going to be the right fit for the client, so I found out how to check what were the top selling products on the major platforms:

  • Amazon -
    Amazon makes it easy with a page, divided in to all their categories, of all their best-selling products.
    Want to launch your product on Amazon? Check out your competition, or discover the gaps that you believe you might be able to fill.

  • eBay -
    With eBay, it’s simply a question of using their search facility and noting the results. The results are updated in real time and show what is demand.
    What you do is type in the first word of the product phrase you are researching, for example type in “tennis” (and when I checked), the first phrase that came up was “tennis balls” followed by “tennis elbow support”.

    You can also type in a more generic word such as “supplements, and it will list what is most popular in order.
  • Etsy -
    Etsy is a very popular marketplace for vintage and handmade items, demanding better prices than eBay does on vintage.
    Again, it’s similar to Amazon and eBay, in that you can search on the site directly.
    Oddly, you can search for best-selling as well as top sellers, which do give different results:
